Many companies are starting subscription box products. There are tons for fashion and food but now companies are creating products for parents of students with speech and language disabilities. One company, The Story Box, has recreated a subscription service containing 2 books a month, with parent guide on how to promote speech and language skills using the specific books included. Keep reading to learn more!
This product was created by an SLP and her husband. They love reading to their children and want to spread the love of literacy. They are generous to provide me with a box to try out and share with all of you! Remember, the thoughts and opinions are all mine!
Each month, you will be welcomed with this box:
I love how everything was packaged when you open. I love the bright colors.
What comes inside? Two books and a parent guide for each story:
The books were stories I never heard of before! I read them to my 19 month old daughter, one story was definitely more appropriate for her based on the amount of language and vocabulary used:
This Jackhammer Sam book had so much repetitive sounds and was so fun! She loved the colors!
The other story would have been more appropriate for older children (compared to my toddler) just based on her short attention span. I definitely plan on using this book with my elementary students. It had a great lesson to be learned.
I loved the suggestions provided in the parent guide. As SLPs we know a lot of these things, but some of the parents we work with wouldn’t have thought of these ideas on their own. I love that the guide is divided into 4 different age groups.
How does this company select the books? They do a lot of research to find books that elicit discussions, and learn new vocabulary, problems and solutions, sequence of events, characters’ thoughts/feelings/intentions, figurative language, and much more!
Would I recommend this product? I would definitely recommend this product for a busy parent that doesn’t have time to research and learn about new books. I would recommend it to parents of my students that want to find new gift ideas. I would recommend it to a new preschool teacher that wants to build their library with new books that are great for building language skills.
