Students are motivated by technology and texting. Why not use it to address a variety of speech and language goals?
No…I am not saying take out cell phones and start texting (although you can do that too). But I will show you how you can use a free app and a free website to target a variety of speech goals in a fun and motivating way!
This free app is a lot of fun. You can change the names of the “characters” or people having the text conversation. You can create the dialogue and then watch the video come to life as if you are watching the text message exchange. You can save the video to your camera roll. CLICK HERE to learn more about this app and to grab it for yourself.
This free website is similar to the app mentioned above but is a website, not an app. This one is great if you don’t have an iPad to use. You can also just change things up and use this instead. You can easily create text dialogues and turn it into images on a fake iphone to save and print out. CLICK HERE to check out this website!
What goals can you address with these tools?
- Sentence structure
- Main idea
- Perspective taking
- Conversational exchanges (initiating, maintaining, and terminating)
- Understanding emotions
- And so much more!
Students can work together to create projects addressing their goals. They can brainstorm character names. What will each of them say and why? How many exchanges will they have? What will the entire conversation be about? Students will be extremely motivated by incorporating technology they won’t mind learning and working on something tricky for them. Both tools are extremely easy to use and did I already mention they are free?!
Check out the video below of some sample texting story videos! Can you guess the goals?!
