Cauldron Quest Board Game (Product Review)

I was so excited to find out that I could review a game by Peaceable Kingdom. They have so many adorable games that students of all ages will just LOVE.

Since I work with primarily older elementary students, they sent me Cauldron Quest to try out!

This game is part of their “cooperative games” line. What does that mean? Students must work together to win!! How appropriate is that for speech and language students?! No winners and working together? SO MANY SKILLS (and avoids so many issues I have with students playing games in my room).

The setting up of this game did not take long. But I will be honest, when I opened up this game, it took me some time to read and understand the directions. There are a lot of steps and pieces. I decided to sum it up and put down the important parts on my dry erase board for my students.

What is the object of the game? To get all of the potion bottles to the cauldron without being blocked by the wizard or the path blockers.

When can students really work together in this game? They can decide when to use a spell breaker token! This token can only be used once and it can remove one path blocker! But remember, it must be used before all 6 of the path blockers are used and placed on the board! They can also work together to decide which potion to swap and which potion bottle to get past the blocker!

Who do I recommend this game for?

-Older elementary students and older

-Students working on social skills, articulation/fluency carryover, or problem solving skills.

I played this game with a group of fifth grade inclusion students working on articulation carryover and higher level thinking as well as a group of sixth grade self-contained students working on social inferencing and problem solving. Both groups LOVED it! I will say, we were not able to finish the game in either 30 minute speech session and the students were SO disappointed. I got hugs and thank yous from them, it was so cute! A teaching assistant that comes with my self-contained group kept asking me, “Where did you get this game it is perfect?!” (I just winked and said that I find all of the great speech games LOL).
