212: Comprehensive Literacy and AAC with Amanda Soper

Comprehensive Literacy and AAC with Amanda Soper

Let’s talk comprehensive literacy and AAC!

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I sat down with Amanda Soper who is an AAC expert, particularly when it comes to literacy and vision-impaired students. She’s here to discuss comprehensive literacy and how we can utilize robust AAC vocabulary to help our students reach their reading goals.

Amanda Soper (she/her) is a speech-language pathologist (SLP) and teacher of the visually impaired (TVI) based in Washington, DC.

Amanda owns a private practice, AACreATively Communicating and recently co-founded a nonprofit organization, The Infinite Learning Foundation, where she innovates therapeutic and education practices so that all students, regardless of disability, can learn to read, write, and communicate.  Her practice provides in-person services in the Maryland-DC area and virtual services around the world.

Amanda runs an online synchronous literacy course, Learn AAC at Home, for learners who use AAC and their families. She is an adjunct professor at Gallaudet University and provides professional development and coaching support for organizations and school districts both across the country and internationally.

Amanda is fiercely passionate about changing mindsets and attitudes about education for individuals with complex communication needs.

In This Episode You’ll Discover:

  • The importance of high-quality literacy instruction with accommodations for our non-speaking students
  • What comprehensive literacy is and how we can apply it in speech
  • Why the science of reading gets such a bad rap
  • Why having a robust AAC vocabulary is critical for success
  • Examples of how to incorporate a language-rich literacy activity with a student with AAC
  • Strategies you can use to make your lessons more meaningful
  • Tips for working with classroom teachers as a team to help your students succeed
