Ready to learn how to make a more inclusive classroom culture?
In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I’m talking all about AAC immersion in the classroom. I sat down with Janna Bedoyan and Morgan van Diepen to talk about why AACs need to be in the classrooms and how we as SLPs can collaborate with other professionals and make it happen.
Janna is a board-certified preschool autism teacher with over ten years of experience in the classroom and with AAC devices. Morgan is a BCBA who collaborates closely with specialists like SLPs and is passionate about finding different ways and tools to make collaboration easier. They are both passionate about making AAC devices more approachable.
So many teachers are not comfortable or equipped to fully immerse AAC devices into their classrooms, so I love what Janna and Morgan are doing. They are truly SLPs at heart and I am so happy to have them on the show today.
In This Episode You’ll Discover:
- Overcoming barriers to collaboration
- The power of professional humility
- Ways to incorporate AAC into daily routines
- Songs for circle time
- The importance of parent coaching
- The benefits of having AAC devices available in the classroom
- How SLPs can best collaborate with teachers and BCBAs
I hope you enjoyed this conversation with Morgan and Janna! The work that they are doing is so, so important. Our students need to be immersed in AAC all day every day and the more we use it, the more comfortable everyone will be with it. There are so many benefits to having AAC devices immersed into the classroom and I hope this episode inspired you.
