You want to incorporate more community themes but want to keep it fun and functional? Here are a few ways you can use a supermarket theme and work on a variety of speech and language goals in a fun way!

Why is the supermarket theme my favorite?
It is so much fun and can bring in so many other themes like money, food, asking directions, prepositions, describing and more!!
Using Supermarket Ads in Speech
Just grabbing what comes in the mail (or “borrow” from your local grocery store) you can have tons of activities and goals met. If you don't have the same grocery store as the one in the area you work in, I recommend trying to get ones from the area so it is more relevant to your students. But you can compare/contrast prices, work on grocery lists (calculate costs), describe, categorize, and more! Students can make collages for different meals, what they would serve at a party, or even by adjectives! Learn more about how I use them by clicking HERE to read a blog post all about it!
Use What You Have!
You can easily use brown paper bags in various ways to work on vocabulary and even basic inferencing skills!
Below you will see a fun way to use brown paper bag books to work on describing, listening, and retrieving grocery store vocabulary! Just staple some bags together, cut them in half and put the answers inside the bags for “each page.”
Supermarket Games to Use in Speech
One of my favorite games (and was super cheap) is this “gone shopping” game. Students can work on food/supermarket vocabulary, turn take, and even role play with it! They get to create a shopping list and take turns finding the items like a memory game.
I also found these super cute mini shopping carts from Hobby Lobby (FYI I don't have a Hobby Lobby near me and I ordered them on their website!). I use them to role play, work on prepositions, or even just as a reinforcer holder! It helps having a miniature version to work on describing so they can really see the parts!
Supermarket Books To Use In Speech
This book was written by SLPs and is perfect for teaching what to do at at supermarket! It is cute, incorporates the vocabulary, and your students will love it!! It is great for targeting reading/listening comprehension, WH questions, vocabulary, problem solving skills, and more!
