Aphasia is a language disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. It's typically caused by a stroke, brain injury, or other neurological conditions, and it impacts a person's ability to communicate effectively.

But the biggest thing that many overlook... Aphasia does NOT impact intelligence!

📢Whether we like it or not, older speech students may not be thrilled about coming to therapy. But building rapport with them can make all the difference!

Understanding academic content isn’t just about

Understanding academic content isn’t just about reading the words on the page - it’s about understanding the language behind those words.

You can read a whole book and still not understand a single thing if you don’t have the language skills to back it up.

Have you ever thought about what actually goes into understanding the main idea?

👉you need to understand the passage
👉you need to know the vocabulary
👉you need to understand the syntax
👉you need to be confident with sentence structure to be able to verbally understand the passage
👉you need to be able to answer questions

Whew!

That’s why as SLPs, we need to teach comprehension differently. When you take the reading piece out and focus on the language of comprehension... that’s when you’ll see progress towards those goals.
