Using Mini Movies In Speech Therapy

Want to use mini movies to target a variety of speech and language goals?

Using Mini Movies in Speech Therapy

Can I use movies in speech therapy?

Yes!  Of course!  Anything that is motivating and used correctly can target a ton of goals in an engaging way!  I am going to share with you my favorite mini movies on You Tube and the various speech and language goals you can use to address them!  Tip: prep the movie before the speech session to skip any commercials!  Feel free to add this website as a “favorite place” or “bookmark” so you can easily grab these videos and watch them straight from this blog post.  No need to go searching each and every time.  Or you can save each of these movies into a playlist in your You Tube account.  Hey, we are all super busy, trying to help you prep as quick as possible!

How do you target goals while students are watching movies?

You can either stop throughout the movie or wait until the end and have the students respond to questions or tasks you present to them!  You can give them graphic organizers to complete while watching or tell them what to watch/listen for.  It all depends on the goal and the abilities of your students.  You know them best.  What would they benefit most from?!

Now onto the list of the movies and the speech and language goals they address…

    • Inferencing:  can they read the facial expressions, change of music, and body language to make smart guesses about the actions, characters, and storyline?
    • Problem solving: what was the girl's problem?  How did she solve it?
    • Verb tenses: play, listen, give, throw, break, cry, fall, and more!
    • Social skills: what would you have done if you were the girl?
    • Sequencing and recall
    • Wh Questions
    • Articulation
  • and more!

    • Inferencing/predicting: what will he do next?  Why do you think he is trying to seem brave?
    • Problem/Solution
    • Sequencing
    • Wh Questions
    • Verb tenses: lock, run, climb, fall, roar, walk, open, close
  • and more!

    • Inferencing/predicting: Why do you think the mom is trying to throw out all of the games?  Do you think it will work?
    • Sequencing
    • Wh Questions
    • Verb tenses
  • and more!

    • Inferencing/Predicting: Will they ever meet?  What are they trying to do?
    • Social inferencing: reading facial expressions and body language
    • Wh Questions
    • Sequencing
    • Verb tenes
  • and more!

As you can see….mini movies can be used for a variety of goals.  But my favorite goal to address is inferencing.  Benefit…you can use with mixed groups!  Make speech fun and address those tricky goals.  Want to use more You Tube in speech?  Check out my post about using commercials to work on inferencing in speech by clicking HERE.  Want more activities for mixed speech groups?  Click HERE!
