I am always looking to figure out new ways to get my kids to understand and express their understanding of higher level concepts!
While working on cause/effect, with groups of all ages and levels, I came up with a visual on the fly!
I apologize for my VERY dirty dry erase board!!!!!! With that said, I made a visual to show the directions of cause/effect. Whether I was showing students a picture, sentence, or story, students were introduced, modeled, prompted, and then expected to use independently this visual.
After each stimuli, they were asked the questions, “what am I asking for?” They had to respond with cause/effect. Depending on the level, the question might have been the exact words cause/effect, for others, they questions said reason/result. Then, students were asked “which do we know?” With models and samples, my students learned, if I am asking for ____ then the question stated the other one! That means we start there! Which way do we need to go to get the cause or effect (whichever was being asked)? I showed them the phrase to use either “because” or “so then” based on the direction going!
They did so well! They started prompting themselves!!
