Articulation Vacation (app review!)

Virtual Speech Center has come out with a brand new app, Articulation Vacation!  They were generous to provide me with a copy to check out and share with all of you!  Remember, the thoughts and opinions are all mine! 🙂

Like their other apps, you can use with multiple students at a time, alter settings to meet your needs, and individualize the activities for the different students you work with, even within one session!

Just enter a student's name, click on their name, and hit “next!”

Then…you can select the phoneme(s) for each student.  I recommend sticking to one for each student at a time.  It will go through one whole set before going to the next one anyway so might as well stick with one at a time.

When you click on a target phoneme, you are prompted to pick the position (initial, medial, final) and level (words, phrases, stories).  You can also click/unclick targets that will be presented.  This is good if you want to remove ones students have mastered, one hold off on words that contain sounds that the student cannot produce.

For each target, an interactive scene is presented.  When you click the scene, a target word/picture is presented.  Students can record their productions, play it back and score themselves (or you can do it for them).  I like the option for “almost.”  You pick the pace, as you hit “next” when you ready to move onto the next picture/scene/target word.  You can also always click the yellow play button on the bottom to have the word presented with a verbal prompt if they cannot read or identify the word by the picture.

You can always enter in “notes.”  This is great so you don't need a paper/pencil next to you to document errors or behaviors of the student.

The scenes keep varying which is great for keeping attention!  I had so much fun checking out what the next one would be and what will the student have to do to get to the image!

You can keep going until all tasks are completed or you can always click “finish.”  At that point, a score report will be shown with the data.  You can see the client, phoneme targeted, levels, score, see notes, and hear the audio!  You can also see the word list worked on.  I love Virtual Speech Center's apps because it stores the reports in the app and you can also email the reports!  This is great for data keeping!

Check out the sentence level:

And the story level:

You can always access score reports the main page and view by goal or by date:

Things I like about this app:

  • Multistudent, individualized, and data collection/progress monitoring
  • Ability to set the settings/edit word lists for your students needs
  • Motivating scenes that keeps motivating
  • Story level is DEFINITELY unique and a huge PLUS for carryover!
  • Love the ability to record and play back
  • Love that you can access recordings, word lists and more from score reports
  • You control the pace and how you use this app!
You can learn more about this $29.99 app by visiting iTunes!

Some days or weeks are harder than others, and tha Some days or weeks are harder than others, and that is just the honest truth! Luckily, there are so many ways we can refocus and stay positive as SLPs.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Marie Muratalla @thanksmorris is joining me on SLP Coffee Talk to talk about using improv as a way to stay positive and feel gratitude in the crazy SLP world we live in!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Marie is a preschool SLP who has found a balance between work & life through the power of gratitude. It is her goal to share the gratitude goodness and empower other SLPs, educators, parents, etc. to take time for self-reflection and see the benefits of leading with gratitude.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is such an impactful episode because Marie is giving us such helpful examples, tips and tricks that we can use every day.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Tune in to hear what to do in moments that feel tough, the benefit of reflecting on the things you are grateful for and more.

I remember those bad sessions. We all do! The sess I remember those bad sessions. We all do! The sessions that didn't go exactly as planned, bad behavior from the students, or students not grasping concepts or enjoying the activity. It happens! We are all human!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Instead of dwelling over it, I used those sessions to really reflect. Why did it go wrong? What could I have done differently? These moments are a learning and growing tool! We all have bad days! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
