Each year we pay dues to ASHA to keep those 3 C's next to our name and to be recognized by the organization as an SLP. Want to learn more from those working behind the scenes of this organization?!
I am so excited to say that I got to ask fun and unique questions to ASHA! I got to ask 3 different workers at ASHA headquarters, 1 social media person and 2 SLPs. I wanted to be able to help SLPs learn more about them and get the inside scoop behind those working for US! Here are their answers to my very important questions!
Who did I get to interview?
Gennith Johnson: Associate Director of Healthcare and CCC-SLP
Aruna Hari Prasad: Associate Director of School Services, CCC-SLP
Kellie Rowden-Racette: Social Media Manager
Now onto the fun questions:
- Which social media platform is ASHA’s favorite and why?
Kellie: I love Instagram and I love how engaged our followers are … but I’m starting to cheat on Instagram with Snapchat 😉
- What does ASHA prefer to see posted on social media from SLPs: Memes, viral videos, SLPs at work, or other (please indicate!)?
Kellie: We love to see our members in action and having fun so videos are really good for that BUT if you get the right photo, that works, too!
- What is your favorite children’s book?
Gennith: Tikki Tkki Tembo by Arlene Mosel is my favorite children’s book.
Aruna: Elephant and Piggy series by Mo Willems
Kellie: The Wide-Mouthed Frog by Keith Faulkner
- What inspired you to work for ASHA?
Gennith: I wanted to work for a national organization that inspires change and encourages leadership in the profession of SLP and audiology.
Aruna: The opportunity to support members, particularly school-based members in professional and clinical work, and impact the profession at a national level.
Kellie: My son who is on the autism spectrum. I credit his EI SLPs for his amazing progress today and wanted to become one … except I didn’t want to go to graduate school (again). Then this a job at the Leader opened up. If you can’t join ‘em, write for them.
- What is one thing you would want every SLP to know about ASHA?
Gennith: There are 282 ASHA staff that are actively engaged in supporting ASHA members and advancing our causes. Most people would be surprised to know there are 46 ASHA Certified staff in the National Office with over 1200 years of combined experience!
Aruna: ASHA employs people with diverse professional and personal backgrounds, including individuals with marketing, graphics, clinical and continuing education experience.
Kellie: There are so many incredible people here who have your back.
- If you can describe the upcoming ASHA conference in Philly in one color, what color would it be?
Dark Teal: It’s going to be a rich conference with so much appeal. (Did that rhyme?)
- Complete the following sentence: SLPs are superheroes because ________.
Kellie: They help you communicate … what’s better than that? Gennith and Aruna are just too shy to say so.
- What is your favorite board game?
Gennith: Scrabble of course!
Aruna: Candyland
Kellie: Ditto on Scrabble
- Complete the following sentence: No one knows this but _________.
Kellie: ASHA is on Snapchat. Seriously. No one seems to know this.
- Complete the following sentence: If I wasn’t an SLP, I would be _____.
Gennith: an international travel journalist or a professional ice cream taster.
Aruna: Fashion designer or architect
Kellie: A social media manager for an association that promotes SLPs. Hey, I did it! Winning!
Did you enjoy reading that?! I know I loved learning why they work for ASHA and what they want SLPs to know about ASHA! We often forget that there are real people working for US. ASHA loves interacting with SLPs in the field, especially on social media! Do you follow @ASHAweb ?!
