Using Epic Books in Speech Therapy

January 25, 2019 Leave a Comment

Want to incorporate more literacy-based activities in your speech therapy room?

Using Epic Books in Speech Therapy

As SLPs we LOVE books and we totally see the benefits of using them in speech:

  • Allows us to easily address a ton of speech goals
  • Makes our therapy academically relevant
  • Helps us tackle mixed speech groups
  • Helps us incorporate thematic vocabulary and units in our speech room
  • Allows us to help build our students' confidence and show them they can be successful

What are some obvious goals you can address with books:

  • WH- questions
  • Sequencing
  • Main idea
  • Summarizing
  • Vocabulary
  • Context clues
  • Inferencing
  • Predicting
  • Listening comprehension
  • Articulation
  • Syntax
  • and so much more!

The problem with loving books so much is that it can be expensive (Amazon obsessed over here!), can require a ton of trips to the library for free books, and can take up a ton of space in your therapy room/closet.

That is why I love having the app, Epic Books on my iPad ready to go when I need a book quickly or just want one without having to buy it!  This app is FREE with an educator email address (or you can get an annual subscription at a reasonable price).

There are tons of books, audiobooks, and videos ready to go on this app.  You can easily search popular books and more.

They even give you some popular search items to help!

You can easily pull a book up on the app and read it to your speech students!  Students love technology and love books so it is a win-win.  Did I mention it makes our life so much easier?

You can easily add the story to your “list” or favorites so you can find it again later quickly.

Curious what is currently on my list?  This list is growing!  I easily made a “class” called speech and just add books to that list.

My favorite feature is the quiz feature!  You can easily make questions and save them right in the app to gather some data!
